Discerning needs vs wants in purchasing a home

House Dream

It is so easy to get caught up in ideas of your perfect house when searching for a home to purchase. Keep in mind that no house is perfect! Rare is the homebuyer who doesn’t have to compromise on something… whether it be price, amenities, location, condition, or something else.

Make your priority list, then determine whether items are deal breakers, needs or wants. Most homebuyers find themselves adjusting their list as they go through their search and see what is actually available. Think about what will make both a positive and negative impact on your life as you live there long term.

Remember that you will likely be living in your house for a long time so you could make changes to bring it closer to your ‘perfect’ house. The thing you can’t change is location and neighborhood. If a property meets that criteria, don’t let minutiae get in the way of getting what could become your ‘perfect’ home. Ultimately, real estate is always a strong long term investment… not only financially but also personally.
