When Paul and Carol Hinderlie created the Harbor View CafĂ© in 1980, they transformed Bill and Ruth’s local tavern into what is known today as a “gem” of the Mississippi River Valley. We first visited it in the 1980s, shortly after we moved to the Twin Cities and read an article about it in Minnesota Monthly. They have never taken reservations, and I remember having to wait close to an hour for a table… no worries, there were lovely shops to explore while we waited. When we went last weekend we had no wait, not sure if there were still shops or not… after all, it is 45 years since they first opened!
From the beginning it was a ‘scratch’ restaurant, which was pretty unique at that time. It has changed hands a number of times over the years but its motto is still “The Best from Scratch,” and it tasted like the latest chef is one of the best. Their menu is also still hand written on a chalk board, with the ability to make changes as the fresh supply changes.
“At Harbor View CafĂ©, every dish begins from scratch—it’s the way we’ve cooked since the very beginning. Our kitchen takes pride in crafting homemade soups, sauces, salad dressings, breads, and desserts, all prepared with care and often featuring locally sourced ingredients. From fresh seafood and tender meats to flavorful vegetarian options, every plate reflects our passion for quality and creativity.”

The restaurant is beautifully situated overlooking Lake Pepin, and the drive to get there is beautiful any time of year but especially nice in the fall when the leaves are colorful. Plan to also make a stop in nearby Stockholm for some lovely shops… including supposedly the best pie shop in America!
