Dave the Pie Guy… old fashioned homemade pies

We went up to Lake Superior last week to spend some time with dear friends who have a home and studio on the south lake shore at Bark Point. When I asked what we could bring as a special treat she asked for apple pie. So, of course, I Googled to find the best homemade pies in the Twin Cities. I found the usual suspects such as Sarah Jane’s and The Buttered Tin… but I was looking for some place I hadn’t experienced before. Dave the Pie Guy kept coming up and after watching a KARE11 video of him I knew we had to try them!

I learned he doesn’t have a crew right now… it’s just him! He answers the phone, peels the apples, bakes the pies, does short order… no wonder he is only open noon-6 and is closed on Mondays!

The shop isn’t anything fancy… the focus is on the food… and exceptional pies. I decided to order an award-winning streusel apple pie and lattice crust cherry pie. I tried contacting him on Monday… but he was closed so I sent an email. He returned my email the next day but I called to confirm pickup. He said he would make it the same day I picked it up so when I arrived a little after noon they were still bubbling hot out of the oven. He even came out to our car to help situate the pies so they were flat and wouldn’t spill all over the car and to make sure the covers were off so they would cool properly.

He explained that his pies have such good flavor because he mixes the fruit… the apple pie had 3 varieties and the cherry pie had both sweet and sour cherries. Needless to say, the flavors in both were outstanding!

Dave talked about how he still makes old-fashioned pies like our Grandmas used to make them… all from scratch, with only natural ingredients. Even his apple peeler attached to the table made me think old-fashioned.

But that doesn’t mean he isn’t open to new ideas… I had to laugh when he talked about a multitude of unique flavors in the video below… including peanut butter and chocolate banana cream pie!

He said to get orders in soon for pumpkin pies for Thanksgiving… he makes them with fresh pumpkins he bakes himself… no canned pumpkin at Dave the Pie Guy… in Minneapolis Kingfield neighborhood!
