Design Trends to watch for in 2024… from paint colors to MCM ideas to what’s in and what’s out

It seems that I have been seeing lists everywhere about the colors of the year and what design trends are in and out for 2024. A common theme is more personalized decor, quiet luxury, and a break from technology… as you can see in the tranquil bathroom above that invites nature in.

San Francisco designer Nozawa says… “What I think will be a big turnabout in design for 2024, is that more and more of my clients are actually wanting to return to ‘dumb homes’ at least that’s what I’m calling the opposite of a smart home! Harsh blue lights and bright touchscreens that illuminate when you walk by at night are starting to give way to a love of mechanical controls: old-school buttons, switches that toggle up and down, and simpler toilet washlets!”

See what other designers are saying in the links below from multiple sources.

COLORS OF THE YEAR

Pantone has been selecting the design color of the year for 25 years, and paint companies now also pick their colors of the year.

MID-CENTURY MODERN

Mid-century modern design has become a favorite worldwide. It’s easy to incorporate the look with a few simple elements.

WHAT’S ON ITS WAY OUT

These articles focus on what to think twice about before proceeding with updates in 2024. Note that some of the links above also talk about what is on its way out. An interesting one to think about is opening kitchen/living areas. After such a focus on open floor plans, some people are longing for more private spaces again.
