Weavers Guild, coffee shop, bookstore, gift shop and more… all at Open Book

Driving by Open Book at 1011 Washington Ave S in downtown Minneapolis you might never guess how much the three renovated 100-year-old buildings that form OPEN BOOK encompasses. Their mission describes who they are: Open Book is a community gathering place dedicated to diverse and dynamic creativity, conversation, and collaboration rooted in the literary and book arts.

Open Book is the first such center in the nation, and this creative space includes not only The Loft Literary Center, but also Milkweed Books, the shop at Minnesota Center for Book Arts, FRGMNT Coffee Cafe, a rooftop deck overlooking US Bank Stadium… and more, including the Weavers Guild of Minnesota.

The Weavers Guild of Minnesota is the largest weaving and spinning guild in the US, and believes that weaving, spinning, and dyeing are fundamental to the human experience. Their programs include classes designed for learners of all skill levels and abilities, workshops with nationally-recognized instructors, and public talks and exhibitions.

When I visited they had an interesting exhibit of dishtowels woven by members of the guild… that exhibit is done, but there will be other exhibits.

What struck me about their third floor space was how spacious it is… and how many looms and spinning wheels there were! They also have a shop to buy weaving supplies. Even if you aren’t a weaver already, it’s a great place to begin!

If you are a writer or maker who has books, book-themed items or other handmade items you would like to offer for sale at the OPEN BOOK Small Business Saturday Mart on November 25… apply to participate!
