Does it pay to have your hardwood floors refinished before selling?

A question that often comes up when sellers are figuring out what updates to do to their homes before selling has to do with flooring. If there are hardwood floors, is it really cost effective to refinish them?

According to the 2022 Remodeling Impact Report from the National Association of Realtors and National Association of the Remodeling Industry, the answer is a resounding yes… with a return of 147% ! And not just for existing hardwood, but even for adding new wood at a return of 118%!

The original hardwood under carpet on the floors in the house pictured above and below were refinished, and new wood flooring was added to extend the hardwood into the kitchen and family room addition… and yes, it paid off!
