When we met friends to celebrate birthdays last month we wanted a small, quiet urban neighborhood restaurant with great food but a menu that also included burgers. The Kenwood was the perfect pick. It is a seasonal, regional neighborhood eatery with a European flair. Its menu is limited enough to prepare everything well, yet varied enough to suit many tastes… from fine dining entrees to burgers, mac and cheese, and grilled cheese.
They don’t take reservations for groups smaller than 6 people and we were only 4 so decided to arrive shortly after they opened for dinner at 5 pm. The sidewalk patio was open but we chose to dine inside and were among the first to arrive. We got a perfect table by the window in the back corner.
The food was delicious… the menu creative but also comforting. I loved seeing all ages, including families… it truly felt like a neighborhood gathering spot.
In the words of the chef…
“Our dishes are intentionally polarizing. They are approachable enough to please the casual diner and adventurous enough to freak out the hardcore foodies.”
If you go, you should know they are closed Mondays. The rest of the week you can order food to go starting at 11:00 am, but indoor and patio seating isn’t available until 5:00 pm. The Kenwood, 2115 W 21st St, Minneapolis, MN 55405
A side bonus is Birchbark Books & Native Arts, the bookstore of Pulitzer Prize winning author Louise Erdrich, which is next door.
