A client who knows I love ice cream told me that Nellie’s is now in the site of the original Izzy’s on Marshall in St. Paul… nice still having an ice cream shop in the neighborhood! We finally had a chance to stop and check it out. They don’t make their own ice cream so it doesn’t have the same appeal for me, but they do make custom ice cream sandwiches.
John ordered a sandwich, chose chocolate chocolate chip for the bottom cookie and peanut butter for the top with caramel topping. The cookies weren’t homemade, but they had many flavors of ice cream and the sandwich was tasty. Biggest comment was it was BIG… a sandwich to be eaten with a spoon rather than picked up to hold in your hand.
I ordered a cone… waffle cone the only option. They topped it with a little cookie, again not homemade… made me think of the Izzy mini ice cream scoop that tops their cones. I like to eat an ice cream cone as we stroll the neighborhood so chose a waffle cone… not a wise choice that day! I asked for a split single but I think they have only one size… a big double!! The ice cream was good but not exceptional, and there was a lot of it!! I had a hard time finishing it both because there was so much to eat that I couldn’t eat faster than it was melting, and because there was so much I got too full.
If you want big portions this is the place to come!!! If I go again I will ask for a cup and a spoon… and plan to share it!
