A Great Way to Hide a Breaker Box

I’m not sure what it is about electricians but they always seem to put the large breaker box right smack in the middle of some key room. Never in the furnace room, or tucked away in a corner of a storage room. Is there a law against that? Asking for a friend. LOL

Regardless, we finished off our lower level a couple months ago and of course we have a large breaker box in the center of a wall right when you come down the stairs, it’s the first thing you see.

I couldn’t just hang a piece of artwork over it as the box went right to the ceiling, so there was no way of getting a nail in above it.

I wanted something to tie in with the design of the room so I drew up a plan and my handy man built it for me. He did a fabulous job!!

First he installed the small 1x2s you see around it above, before the sheet rock went up. Then I bought a piece of plywood and painted it the same color as the walls on the inside as well as those trim pieces. With left over shiplap boards from the fireplace, we covered the plywood. Three hinges and a magnetic latch and that’s it! Inexpensive and easy.

Once a piece of iron artwork was hung, the shiplap became the frame. No one that has been in our house realizes it is the breaker box cover and are shocked when I show them.

My advice….think outside the box. 🙂  Okay, I couldn’t resist that pun.
