It is homemade soup season for me, and I decided to share some of my favorite quick-stop Minneapolis and St. Paul destinations for homemade soup this week.
Birdsong Soups
When I published my chicken corn chowder soup recipe last week I got a message from my ‘soup lady’, Pam Knutson of Birdsong Soups. I first met her six years ago, when I was searching for homemade soup when I don’t have time to make it myself. Pam has cooked in kitchens throughout the world including London, India and Thailand… but some of her favorite cooking was at Cafe Brenda right here in Minneapolis. Her Birdsong Soups took flight after coming upon the idea of a weekly soup program to share her favorite soups with friends and family nearly 20 years ago. She incorporated her breadth of knowledge to start a Community Supported Soup group, and it continues to thrive, delivering fresh, local, chef-created soup to a corner near you each week. Thai Pumpkin is one of my favorites.

Turtle Bread Company
Best known for their awesome Tomato Basil soup, I also love their Garbanzo Spinach and Chicken Wild Rice soups. With three Minneapolis locations, it is easy to pop into Turtle Bread and pick up a loaf of bread and a pint of soup to go.

D’Amico & Sons
You may think of D’Amico as the place to go for salads, sandwiches and lemon bars, but this is where I stop to get their fabulous Tuscan Chicken Soup… and with so many locations throughout the metro it’s not hard to stop and pick up a half gallon-to-go!
iPho by Saigon
This is our grandson’s favorite place to go for Pho, so much so that he requested it for his birthday dinner! It’s on University in St. Paul, only about 1 1/2 blocks from the Dale Street Station of the LRT green line.
Cecil’s Deli
I think of Cecil’s as the place to go for the best Reubens around, but this unassuming Jewish deli on Cleveland near St. Catherine University in St. Paul is also a great destination for homemade soup to go with your sandwich. Not many places can you get amazing Reubens plus Chicken Soup with Matzo Ball and Home Made Sweet and Sour Cabbage Soup with Beef (Borscht).
I realize this only scratches the surface. Do you have a favorite homemade soup destination to share? I would love to hear about them!
An addition from a reader… with whom I heartily agree!
Cafe Latte’ at Grand and Victoria in St Paul. A daily variety of 6 made from scratch soups and chilies. And of course you need to bring home one or two of their great cakes, cheesecake or tarts. I have been eating there for over 30 years and you can’t beat the quality.
