Main Street Farmer… a restaurant worth the drive

When my husband’s cousin and his wife suggested finding a place for dinner between their lake cabin west of the Twin Cities and our place in Golden Valley we searched for restaurants worth the drive. Main Street Farmer Eatery in St. Michael was reviewed in January’s Minnesota Monthly as a farm-to-table restaurant worth visiting… and in March by Mpls St. Paul Magazine as a road-trip worthy restaurant. It sounded like the place to go!

We were not disappointed!! When you are in the restaurant it feels like you could be in some trendy south Minneapolis neighborhood like Kingfield or Linden Hills instead of charming small-town St. Michael.

We complimented our server on her mouth-watering descriptions of everything on the menu and she said she should know… she is married to the chef! Chef Aaron Hagerdorn left his position as chef at the Hyatt Regency in downtown Minneapolis to open this restaurant that is as locally focused as possible… made easier by being out in farm country!

They have menus for different times of the day and we were there for Siesta Menu, served from 2 to 5 pm. It was a nice, uncrowded time to be there… by the time we left we were happy to see it filling up for the evening.

We wanted to experience as much as possible, so tried different dishes… each equally delicious!  Their sloppy joes with both ground beef and pulled pork topped with crunchy onions is one of their signature dishes… mighty impressive, one of those times it would be nice to have a hinged snake jaw!  Presentation of the spicy shrimp tacos was as impressive as the tacos themselves. I had the house salad and salmon… fresh greens with champagne-honey dressing, sunflower seeds, dried cranberries and creme fraiche… wonderfully light and fresh tasting. A cup of borscht soup was bowl-size, wonderfully flavorful with an egg, potatoes and their house-made smoked kielbasa.

Of course we had to save room for dessert! No-brainer for me was rhubarb pie, yummmmm! Blackberry cheesecake was very unique with a red velvet chocolate cake crust.

We will definitely be back! It will be easier to find this time, now that we know where it is. It is located right on Main Street so should be very easy to find… but both couples almost didn’t see it because our GPS directed us around the back way into the parking lot so we didn’t see the front right on Main Street!

Hot tip… this is very close to the Albertville outlet mall… worth a stop before you head out to wherever you are heading next…

The next time I am working with clients looking to buy in this area, I will definitely tell them how lucky they will be to be close to the Main Street Farmer Eatery for great food and an extensive drink menu.  Check out homes for sale in St. Michael and let us know if you would like to take a look yourself!
