This Wind Map is so amazing I just had to share! The snapshot below is from last Sunday morning… the live map is updated every hour and is in constant motion, showing the delicate tracery of the wind patterns… click to see what the wind is doing now!
It is fascinating to watch the movement of this ancient energy source. Growing up on the plains of North Dakota, I have always been acutely aware of the wind and love this visualization. I have always thought this ancient energy source should be greater utilized. It seems appropriate to think about alternative sources of energy such as wind as we approach Earth Day 2012.
This map is a personal art project at Hint.fm, the collaboration site of visualization artists and technologists Fernanda Viegas and Martin Wattenberg, leaders of Google's "Big Picture" visualization research group in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Their intriguing work seeks to create new ways to look at data to stimulate new conversation and understanding.
