4 Tips for Embracing Change

Change-treeIt seems like the topic of change comes to my mind every fall, likely inspired by the beauty of the changing leaves. But change is as contstant as the air we breathe… in fact, change is what signifies we are alive.

Buying or selling a home ranks right up there with the most stressful changes you will experience in your life. Whether you welcome change or not, most people both seek and fear it at the same time. Here are some tips to help you deal with and embrace change in your life.

1) Acknowledge and express your emotions. Moving into a situation that is new and unknown can make us feel uncomfortable. This is perfectly normal. We often tend to focus on the details of the change, but it is authentically acknowledging and expressing your emotions that can enable you to move through it with more ease and grace. Keep in mind that there is no 'right' or 'wrong' emotional response to change, it is only repressing your true feelings that gets you into trouble.

2) Learn to let go. Accept that nothing lasts forever. Life is overflowing with the new, but whether you are letting go of people or stuff or situations and experiences you must empty out the old to make room for the new.

3) Know what stresses you out and get support. Learn to know yourself and where you need help… then ask for it. Getting support not only makes it easier for you, it also allows other people to be of service… something most people love the opportunity to do.

4) Look for the gold. There is a certain amount of melancholy in every change, whether we consider it good or bad, because we must leave a part of ourselves behind to embrace the new. Even difficult changes inevitably lead to good… look for it but give it time. Remember, we are all works in progress.

Life itself is about evolving and actively creating change. It happens every day, every moment, everywhere.
