Sunday’s Site – Windom Neighborhood, Minneapolis

The Windom Community of Southwest Minneapolis is tucked into the northwest corner of I-35W and Crosstown Hwy 62. Close to major arteries, it is a quiet neighborhood with easy access to the rest of the metro area. Two great destinations anchor opposite corners of this neighborhood… Bachman's Floral Gift & Garden headquarters in the SW corner (with Patrick's Bakery & Cafe inside), and the Museum of Russian Art in the NE corner.

When I met with a client in the neighborhood last week he talked about how much he has loved living in this tight-knit community that has amazing turnouts for block parties and watches out for each other. He has lived here for 12 years and will be sorry to say good-bye to the neighborhood.

Both the community and school were named after William Windom, a politician who lived 1827-1891 and served Minnesota in both houses of Congress in Washington, and was also United States Secretary of the Treasury.

Windom Community Center shares its building with Windom Spanish Dual Immersion & Open School, a K-5 magnet school that is part of Minneapolis Public Schools. This unique program brings children from two language groups together to learn from each other.

More than half of the homes in this neighborhood are 1 1/2 story houses built in the 1940's. They average about 3 bedrooms and 2 baths, with an average sale price of about $223,000 in the last year. Although mostly residential, an industrial area comprising about 15% of the land is located in the southern part of the community.

Windom community's main commercial strip is along Nicollet Avenue, and my client and I planned to meet at Shiraz Persian restaurant at 61st & Nicollet. We were surprised to find Cattle Ranch Steak House in its place but decided to stop there anyway. It felt like a traditional steak house, traditional decor and menu with good food. Our server was very friendly and helpful, and what appeared to be the owner stopped by our table to make sure everything was all right.

We learned that the restaurant has the same owner as the popular Tailgate Sports Cafe next door. My husband and I decided to check that out another day and were amazed by how extensive the menu was. Our server said they have really good food but they are known for their burgers, so decided to try them. They were delicious, and I was surprised to find not just one or two measly tomato slices on my burger, but 4… along with 2 huge leaves of lettuce, someone after my heart! 🙂

Windom's 3rd Annual Holiday Stop & Shop supporting local businesses is taking place Saturday, December 4, 2010… it will feature fun activities, special savings and a chance to win gift certificates from area businesses.
