The Creative Activities building is right by the main entrance to the Minnesota State Fair but I must admit I rarely stopped there until recently, when our daughter-in-law began exhibiting her knitting… just goes to show how a personal connection can really make a difference. This year we were proud to see her blue-ribbon green shawl in a prominent position in the big display case you see as you walk into the building!
I am amazed at how many outstanding items are displayed each year… last year over 7300 items of the finest needlework, handcrafts, baking and canning were exhibited and the cases are filled again this year. Our daughter-in-law fits the average of 3-4 items per person… this year she is showing the green shawl, two cranberry berets (one awarded a red ribbon) and a colorful baby sweater.
There is no shortage of talent in Minnesota, and the state fair gives yet another opportunity to showcase creative talent of many kinds. We attended a panel discussion of Minnesota mystery writers when we were there this week and one of the questions they talked about was why there are so many successful writers in Minnesota. They answered that not only are there many successful writers… creative pursuits of all kinds thrive here because Minnesota and Minnesotans are very supportive of the arts… one of the things that makes this such a great place to live!
