It's summer! Saturday was a beautiful summer day, perfect for hanging out at the pool. I live in a townhouse complex that has an outdoor pool, and as I headed over for a swim I thought about how outdoor pools aren't that common in Minnesota…land of lakes and snow.
If your sense of place includes a sunny swimming pool, you can always buy a house and add one, but it is definitely easier to find one already present. For many Minnesotans buying a house, a pool is actually a negative because of the upkeep for a relatively short outdoor swimming season…best to sell in the summer when the water looks wonderfully inviting on a hot summer day!
I got curious about how many properties were actually available with swimming pools. So…I did a search of active listings in 6 western suburbs…Golden Valley, St. Louis Park, Hopkins, Edina, Minnetonka and Plymouth. I found homes with swimming pools in all types of homes and price ranges. Not surprisingly, they are more common in condos and townhomes because of the shared maintenance.
CONDOS
- 326 total active listings
- 109 with an outdoor pool – 33%
- Average list price $148,351
TOWNHOMES
- 360 total active listings
- 47 with an outdoor pool – 13%
- Average list price $214,460
HOUSES
- 910 total active listings
- 53 with an outdoor pool – 6%
- Average list price $961,660
I expected many condos to have indoor pools (37%), but was surprised that nearly as many (33%) had outdoor pools. It sounds like today is going to be another hot, summer day…one when pools look mighty good!
