Sunday’s Site – Bloomington Art Center

There are so many Arts & Entertainment opportunities available in the Twin Cities area that it’s hard to find a day when choices…ranging from professional to amateur, pricey to free…aren’t plentiful.

In addition to world-famous theaters and art galleries, we also have many local theaters and art exhibits with outstanding amateur work. I have visited the Bloomington Art Center a couple of times in the last few weeks for a concert, art show and theater production, so it seems appropriate to share this lesser-known venue as this week’s site.

The Bloomington Art Center is part of the Bloomington Civic Plaza, which is also the home of city hall and the city police. Located just west of I-35W between W 98th St and Old Shakopee Rd, it includes a theater, art gallery and gift shop. The Art Center offers classes for all ages and the site hosts both visual and performing arts.

Bloomart5v_2 The striking mural gracing the exterior of the theatre building was just completed in 2007 by St. Paul artist Erik Pearson. With 366 seats, the theatre space provides an intimate setting with not a bad seat in the house.

We attended a thoroughly entertaining production of The Pajama Game presented by the Bloomington Civic Theatre on Friday night. In typical fashion, it far surpassed expectations for a community theatre production. (REVIEW)

We took advantage of their theatre package including dinner at Kincaid’s, perennially on the list of the metro area’s Top 10 Restaurants…and enjoyed a full evening with good friends, good food and good entertainment!

The largest Twin Cities suburb in both population and area, Bloomington, Minnesota, extends for about 37 miles across the southern metro between I-494 and the Minnesota River, starting at Highway 169 near the expansive Hyland Lake Park Reserve on the west to just past the Mall of America on the east.
