My Favorite Pizza Places in the Twin Cities

Picture this – Sharlene wants me to write about pizza shops in the Twin Cities. I really like pizza and I’ve been around the block a few times. But, doing research for pizza in the Twin Cities has proven to be way more complex than I first thought. So, I have my favorites, which is what I started out with, but there are so many wonderful places and pizzas, I couldn’t help but add a few more shops to the list.

Black Sheep Coal-Fired Pizza… some of the best pizza in the Twin Cities The most awesome thing about Black Sheep Pizza was the crust… crisp but still chewy, thin but not crackery… the secret is their coal-fired oven, the first in Minnesota. But it doesn't stop there… they offer 10 inventive pizza combinations on their menu… or feel free to create your own. Check out Black Sheep Oven Fired Pizza for yourself at 600 Washington Ave N, Minneapolis, MN 55401 in the North Loop… or at 512 N Robert St, St. Paul, MN 55102, 612.342.2625

Pig Ate My Pizza  This chef-driven pizza pub has some of the most original pizzas you will find, with some classics and some rotating craft pizzas. The “Piggy” is their most popular dish. Salty pepperoni, bacon, prosciutto, and ham cubes are piled on a buttery, brioche crust. This is a one-of-a-kind! 4154 W Broadway Ave, Robbinsdale

Pizza Biga Pizza Biga is in that kind of neighborhood, at 48th and Chicago in South Minneapolis. And the bonus about this neighborhood is that it is also just a couple blocks from beautiful Minnehaha Parkway. It has an intimate, cozy vibe… good place to relax with a good fire-roasted pizza. Their Dan's Balsamic pizza is one of my favorite pizzas ever… balsamic vinegar, sausage, spinach, capicola, red onion and mozzarella… it is truly awesome! 4762 Chicago Ave South, Minneapolis, MN 55407, 612.823.7555

Punch Neapolitan Pizza The centerpiece of each restaurant is its wood-burning oven, hand built by the owner and the cooks…each using about 50,000 individual hand-made glass tiles imported from Italy. They are individually named famous pizzerias from Naples, where the dream of Punch began. The ovens burn at a blisteringly hot 800 degrees…and the pizzas only take 90 seconds to cook. No need to call ahead for take-out…click here for a video of their beautiful ovens in action! Lake Calhoun Minneapolis, 3226 W Lake St, Minneapolis MN 55416, 612.929.0006

Pizzeria Lola How could I almost forget about this inventive pizzeria that is on London food critic Daniel Young's top 20 pizza places in the world! 5557 Xerxes Ave S, Minneapolis

Sweet Taste of Italy It doesn't look impressive from the street and the parking lot is pretty beat up, but the interior was neat and clean and the food was great…we ordered garlic cheese bread and an alfredo pizza with sausage, pepperoni and pineapple to take to our grandson's soccer game… everyone was raving about it! I loved the sweet taste of the garlic cheese bread, made with homemade bread they not only bake but make every day. In fact, everything on the menu in this family owned restaurant is made from scratch every day! 9576 Noble Pkwy N. Brooklyn Park, MN, (763) 493-4733, 6023 42nd Ave. N. Crystal, MN 763.533.6554

Some other favorite pizza shops

Rocky Rococo Probably my favorite pizza place is Rocky Rococo. Unfortunately only one remains in Minnesota, for which I am very grateful! The thicker crust and less “tomatoey” sauce wins my praise every time I go there. It’s a bit hidden away, even though its address is right on Brooklyn Boulevard in Brooklyn Park. You should go there! Tasty, tasty, tasty! It leads the Top Five. 7540 Brooklyn Blvd. Brooklyn Park, MN 55443, 763. 560.5451

Davanni's Pizza & Hot Hoagies Davanni’s is up in my top five pizza places in the Twin Cities. There are several locations around the Cities. Their deep dish pizza is my favorite; I like it with white sauce, green olives and sausage! Try it – you’ll like it! Minneapolis – Uptown – Lake & Hennepin, 1414 W Lake St, Minneapolis, MN 55408, 612.822.3111

Galactic Pizza Wild and crazy! You have to experience this one, it is very hard to describe. Besides tasty, their pizzas have bold and exotic toppings. , 2917 Lyndale Avenue South, 612.824.9100

Pizza Nea The Nordeast pizza place has been crafting exceptional Neapolitan pies for 13 years. Highlights include any of the traditional red or white pizzas but you'd be nuts not to check out the specials which have included a pie topped with nduja (spicy pork sausage), ricotta cheese, and local honey. Pizza Nea is in my Top Five. The staff was very helpful and gracious. The pizza was terrific! 306 East Hennepin, Minneapolis, MN 55414, 612.331.9298

Pizza Luce A Twin Cities favorite pizza place for many years, Pizza Luce has great pizza and wonderful wait staff. Their menu is always creative and the pizza always tastes great! They have several locations in the Cities, but my favorite is their St Louis Park venue along Blake Street. 210 North Blake Road Hopkins, MN 55343, 952.767.0854

Parkway Pizza Parkway Pizza, which claims to have the best ground sausage in the Twin Cities. We were very pleased with their scratch loaded pizzas… fresh and delicious!  They even have a Farmer's Market pizza special that changes each week and uses what's fresh and in season that week. People who live in this neighborhood love it! Check it out for yourself and find out why… Northeast, 2851 Johnson Street NE,
Minneapolis, MN, 55418, 612.788.1442; Longfellow, 4349 Minnehaha Ave, Minneapolis, MN — 55406, 612.729.9090

Broadway Pizza Since the original (now relocated) Broadway Pizza opened in North Minneapolis in 1961, the restaurant has opened many additional locations throughout the Twin Cities. Known for its railroad theme (you have to see the fun and nostalgic caboose), Broadway specializes in thin crust pizza. 2025 W River Rd, Minneapolis, MN 55411, 612.529-7745

Cossetta's Italian Market & Pizzeria Another wonderful “traditional” pizza place in the Twin Cities is Cossetta's Italian deli that opened in 1911. Its in St Paul on 7th Street. If you order a whole pizza, it's a choose-your-own, picking from a wide range of traditional toppings on top of a scratch, hand-kneaded crust. They've also got pizza by the slice with sausage, pepperoni, or plain cheese, plus a three-topping slice special of the day.  211 7th St W, Saint Paul, MN 55102, 651.222.3476
