MidModMen+friends: A treasure trove for the 50’s

Come on in to MidModMen+friends and feast your eyes on mid-century modern furniture, lamps, tables and chairs and much more… all vintage mid-century furnishings that used to be part of family homes. Pictures don't do justice to all that you will find at MidModMen+friends. Get ready for colors! The lamps are extremely colorful and often pretty large.

When they started the store in October 2012 Neal and Jon placed the store, as appropriate, at the mid point between Minneapolis and St. Paul… at 2401 University Avenue. It's on the north side of University Avenue between Highway 280 and Raymond.

Great finds can sometimes involve an adventure. This treasure trove is well worth any access difficulties. There is parking nearby on city streets, and the store's small parking lot is just west of the store front. As you travel west on University Avenue, you have to be quick to turn in the alley west of their building. Limited parking is available in that lot (look for the signs). The store is located on University Ave so Metro Transit's Green Line is right outside the door.

The whole experience will leave you wondering where the black & white television is… and understanding why they have won awards as the best place to buy vintage mid century modern furniture.

MidModMen mapMidModMen+Friends is also not far from two famous modern houses, in case you want to drive by to expand your outing (they are privately owned and not open to the public).

The Lippincott House at 252 Bedford St SE was designed by Elizabeth and Winton Close in 1938. It was the first example of the International Style in Minnesota, an essential component of Mid-Century Modernism. Across the street is another famous Minnesota house… the Malcom Willey House designed by Frank Lloyd Wright in 1934. My understanding is that when I-94 was built it swerved to avoid this house now at the end of a dead end street looking down on I-94… it has been said this house is what saved Prospect Park from the bulldozer.

Griswold1Let us know if you would like to explore the Prospect Park or nearby St. Anthony Park university areas, or go on a mid-century modern house hunt. We just helped a relocating architect and his family buy the amazing home that mid-century architect David Griswold designed for himself in 1952…they are moving in this weekend!
