The demise of downtown parking lots… Minneapolis is growing up

Parking lot

When I work with relocation clients wanting to live in the city, one of the most common comments I hear about Minneapolis is how it doesn't really feel like a big city, it isn't dense and walkable enough… but that is changing.

Washington1The downtown population has increased by 25% in the last 10 years, and Downtown Minneapolis is currently in the midst of a huge renaissance. It seems like there is groundbreaking for some new building project almost every week… ok, that is exaggerating but new building is significant and downtown surface parking lots are giving way to buildings… as the city 'grows up' to become a city of people who walk, bike and use transit rather than drive their cars.

New projects such as one for affordable and senior housing are also bringing more diversity to the city… which also means people working different shifts… which means activity at all times of the day and night… which also improves safety.

Minneapolis is becoming a 'real city'… will Franklin Avenue become our Champs Elysees?
