The current Matisse Exhibit at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts is just one example of the Twin Cities' thriving arts community, and a good example it is. The Cone sisters' Matisse collection at the Baltimore Museum of Art is considered the largest and most significant in the world. Of the 500 pieces in the collection, this special exhibition features 50 works of painting and sculpture, 30 prints, and the artist’s book Jazz.
I love the quote below from JAZZ…
"HAPPY ARE THOSE WHO SING with all their heart, from the bottoms of their hearts. To find joy in the sky, the trees, the flowers. There are always flowers for
those who want to see them."
When we got to the JAZZ exhibit, our grandson surprised us by telling us that favorite was 'Icarus'. He went right to it, and told us the story of Icarus!
He also said he wanted to go out and take pictures of the lions in front of the museum. What used to be the front of the museum overlooking the sprawling grounds of Fair Oaks mansion is no longer used as an entrance after a couple additions/renovations. The mansion is no longer there, either… it is now a full block park.
It doesn't look like the lions were there when the original building was built in 1915, but they are there now, not sure when they were added. Which brings up another question… why do so many museums and libraries built in that style have lions in front??? Maybe that is the subject of another post…
The site of the Minneapolis Institute of Arts is now also the home of Minneapolis Children's Theater Company (CTC) and MCAD, Minneapolis College of Art and Design.
It is in the heart of a historic and diverse neighborhood just a few blocks south of downtown Minneapolis. See Minneapolis homes for sale in the Whittier neighborhood and surrounding area.
