Unlike the many shops that sell coffee and have a few pastries on the side, this self-proclaimed "old style bakery" serves delicious baked goods… and offers FREE coffee to go with your pastry when you eat it there. What isn't old style is the free WiFi… AND gluten free delicacies!
I have a client relocating to the Twin Cities from Tennessee who was absolutely thrilled to find gluten free items so readily available here… she said it is really hard to find them even in grocery stores there and was delighted when I took her to Izzy's Ice Cream shop and she even got a gluten free cone!
Mainstreet Bakery not only has deli style donuts, cookies, pastries and cupcakes to enjoy there with free coffee… they also have breads, cakes and jams to take home.
We got some cinnamon chunk bread, which made fabulous toast… thick slices with lots of cinnamon, would also make great French toast. I made a sandwich with one of their ciabatta hoagies last night, which was also fabulous! I am usually not a big fan of ciabatta rolls, which tend to have a tough crust. This was soft, light and airy… like a soft hoagie roll only lighter… simply heavenly.
MainStreet Gourmet Bakery is located in a strip mall right across the street from the new Wayzata Promenade development. It is challenging for businesses in this shopping strip right now, with major construction across the street… and a street which has been reduced to slow, one-lane traffic.
When finished, however, the new development which includes a Lunds grocery store, senior and luxury apartments and condos, should be a perfect fit for this old-school bakery… both attracting Baby Boomers seeking walkable neighborhoods and a sense of community.
My understanding is the first senior apartments are to open in October. MainStreet Gourmet Bakery will be ready and waiting for their new neighbors to come over and start the day with them… and enjoy free coffee along with friendly conversation and delicious pastries!
