Located on 320 acres in the heart of West St. Paul and Mendota Heights, Dodge Nature Center was one of the first nature centers in the state of Minnesota, founded in 1967.
I noticed immediately that Dodge was different from the other nature centers I visited this past week. In addition to its miles of trails through prairies, forests, lakes and wetlands, it includes a working farm with animals, a working windmill pumping water, an old schoolhouse, a museum, an apiary, an orchard, sap-producing maple trees… and a nature preschool where the children regularly interact with the animals and explore the trails!
Open to the public 7 days a week, its five-six miles of trails are open for hiking from sunrise to sunset. In addition, they have an extensive education program covering more than 50 different topics. Click here for trail maps and directions to Dodge Nature Center.
