Selling and Moving Are Emotional

Moving can be very emotional.

I met with a Client who we're helping move next week.  She is very emotional about the change.  She's been on a waiting list for a Senior Apartment for quite awhile and has only lived in her current place for six months.  She got a call about 3 weeks ago that an apartment is available and she has to move December 11th.  She's in turmoil.  This is all happening too fast.

So we've talked and talked about the situation.  I've tried to help her the best I can.  I've reminded her that she's been waiting for a year to have the opportunity to move in the new place.  And that where she's currently living was always meant to be temporary.  I've also told her that a couple of  months from now, she'll be settled, happy in her new home and she'll know that it was the right move.

My client is moving from one apartment to another and it's been tough.  But, selling a home you've owned can be hard too.  Awhile back, Beata Rydeen wrote that selling your home can be an emotional roller-coaster……and boy was she right.  Sometimes you're selling because you want to and sometimes your selling for reasons out of your control like a job transfer.  Either way, there are going to be ups and downs.

When I meet with a new Client, I always tell them that they need to look at their house like a commodity.  It has to be de-personalized in order to sell.  I know it's hard, but it's necessary in today's market.  My standard reference is that selling your home should be like selling your car.  When you sell a car you clean it out and clean it up.  You don't leave cups in the trays and personal items in the glove-box.  You know that you'll get more $$ for the car if you make it look the best it can.  A home is no different……it's just more personal.

Yes, there are going to be a lot of emotions to selling your home.  But, when you've made the decision to move, your Realtor will help you through this.  They're experts, have experienced most emotions and they can keep the process in perspective.
