If you live in Minnesota, water becomes a part of your life and also becomes a part of many special occasions. In the metro area, boat cruises are often a part of special events and are available on Lake Minnetonka on the west side of the metro, on the Mississippi River through the central part of the metro, and on the St. Croix River on the east side of the metro.
Last weekend we enjoyed a celebration on a paddlewheel boat of the St. Croix Boat & Packet Co. in Stillwater, Minnesota, a charming historic river valley town on the Minnesota-Wisconsin border. Although not part of the core of Minneapolis-St. Paul, it is close enough that it is home to many people who work in the city but prefer Stillwater's small-town feel.
In spite of snow earlier in the week it was a beautiful afternoon, but the fall colors weren't as vibrant as they often area…a dry summer and early freeze are likely taking their toll.
This trip we didn't have time to stop and enjoy downtown Stillwater with its unique shops and fine restaurants, but we enjoyed the river, the crisp fall air and a sense of place that defines Minnesota. A good time was had by all.
