When my husband and I were out wandering the Hennepin-University corner of Northeast Minneapolis last Saturday we stopped for a Punch Neapolitan Pizza treat…and had a nice surprise when we filled our Punch card and got a free pizza!
My first encounter with Punch Neapolitan Pizza was a number of years ago, when clients told me they were going to celebrate making an offer on a house by going to dinner at Punch…the same restaurant where they went for their first date. They raved about it, so I decided I had to try it…and like so many before and after, I was both amazed and delighted to find such an Italian haven right here in Minneapolis-St. Paul!
The only Punch Pizza when I first discovered it was the original, in Highland Park in St. Paul. Shortly after that a second restaurant opened, and more have been popping up ever since…now with 6 restaurants dotting the metro area and another scheduled to open in December. As a Realtor, I am constantly criss crossing the metro, and am delighted to find a Punch Pizza nearby, almost wherever I am going. I point them out to clients new to the area and we frequently take visitors as we showcase the treasures of life in Minneapolis-St. Paul. It always impresses them that not only do the locals rave about it…but when actress Meryl Streep was here filming "A Prairie Home Companion" she called the Borgata her favorite pizza, ever.
The centerpiece of each restaurant is its wood-burning oven, hand built by the owner and the cooks…each using about 50,000 individual hand-made glass tiles imported from Italy. They are individually named famous pizzerias from Naples, where the dream of Punch began.
The ovens burn at a blisteringly hot 800 degrees…and the pizzas only take 90 seconds to cook. No need to call ahead for take-out…click here for a video of their beautiful ovens in action!
