Sunday’s Site – Salem Lutheran Diner, Minnesota State Fair

NOTE: see the bottom of Sunday's Site posts for homes for sale in the area

Celebrating 60 years at the Minnesota State Fair this year, the Salem Lutheran Church diner is one of  four remaining volunteer-run church dining halls…all of which keep very busy. Salem was seeking additional volunteers from outside their congregation this year so my husband and I signed up to help on Thursday.

Our shift ran from 6:00 am to 2:30 pm and the tables were full most of the time, often with people standing in line outside the diner anxiously awaiting their turn for the homestyle cooking…no fried food on a stick here! The photo above was taken when the diner shut down for shift and menu change…about the only time tables weren't full…and I was free to take a picture!

Breakfast selections included fresh pancakes made from a 60-year-old recipe and delicious French toast. I was assigned to the 'toast' station for egg orders…learned they had lost their 'toast lady' in the last few years…the same woman had been doing the toast station for 50 years!

Lunch included homemade soups, and meatball sundaes were popular at the outside counter…scoop of mashed potatoes, topped with a homemade meatball and gravy. People liked to sit and visit at the long tables with benches. Many came in not knowing anyone…but didn't rush to leave as they chatted with new-found friends at their table!

The Salem Lutheran diner is only one of 300 food concessions at the Minnesota State Fair, which was first held in 1859. It is the largest 12-day event in North America, with between 1.6 and 1.7 million visitors each year…a can't-miss, end-of-summer tradition for many Minnesotans!
