Whatever home you buy, it's never really 'yours' until you put a piece of yourself into it. We were invited to dinner recently by a young couple I helped buy a home a few years ago. I had not been at their home since they moved in and it was so much fun to see how they had creatively made the interior space their own.
What I found even more intriguing, however, was how their back yard reflects them and their lifestyle. I remembered how they love the arts and also had a bit of the country in them…had dreams of having an organic farm…and bought a charming home in the Bancroft neighborhood of south Minneapolis so they could bike to work, walk to restaurants and become part of a local community.
They obviously love their community and their home…and have brought a bit of the country and their commitment to the arts and sustainable living into their back yard…complete with a garage that is an artist's canvas, a dog, gardens including fresh herbs…plus beautiful chickens and a chicken coop!
It feels so rooted not only in the earth but also in local and global communities. As we gathered at the splendid table under a canopy of greenery with the dog and chickens running around in the back yard it felt like we were in the south of France…or maybe Nicaragua…
Wherever it felt like, we were firmly rooted in south Minneapolis…in a setting that was created to clearly reflect the sense of place of the people who live there…exactly as it should be.
