Sunday’s Site – Wayzata on the Bay

NOTE: see the bottom of Sunday's Site posts for homes for sale in the area

Minnesota is known for its lakes and last week we visited a first ring suburb only 15 minutes from downtown Minneapolis…Robbinsdale, which began around Lake Crystal. This week we move 12 miles west of Minneapolis to the much larger Lake Minnetonka and the small picturesque community of Wayzata, Minnesota.

Lake Minnetonka is the largest lake in the Twin Cities metro area, and in the mid 1800's Wayzata was the main transportation stop for this resort destination. At that time its 99 miles of lakeshore (now about 140 miles!) was scattered with 17 hotels where vacationers would stay. Over the years the focus shifted from hotels to single family homes but Wayzata is still one of the best places for visitors to see Minnesota's popular Lake Minnetonka.

This lakeshore community of about only 4,000 residents is on the north side of Wayzata Bay, across from Excelsior on the south side. In the summer a restored steamboat takes passengers back and forth between Excelsior and Wayzata for a boat ride and stops for boutique shopping and lakeview restaurants such as Sunsets. In winter boats are replaced by ice fishing houses…the Wayzata area is vibrant year round.
